Starting School and Transitions
Starting school is a significant milestone. Whether your child is moving up from our own Nursery or joining us for the first time, our transition programme is designed to ensure a gentle, gradual, and joyful introduction to Reception life.
A Confident Step Forward
For both internal and external families, our transition process is built on the principle that success occurs when the child feels safe, known, and familiar with their new environment. We view transition not as a single event, but as a gradual, child-centred process that involves all stakeholders: the child, the family, and our staff.

A Smooth Journey from Our Nursery
Our internal process is designed to maximise familiarity and security:
Known Practitioners
Alleyn Court Nursery and Reception teachers work closely together to share and build on their existing knowledge about each child’s development, personality, and strengths.
Learning Journeys
The knowledge of your child’s learning, interests, and needs, documented throughout their time in Nursery, is smoothly transferred to the Reception and Pre-Prep team, ensuring we hit the ground running on their first day.
Familiar Faces, New Friends
Children spend time sharing their Learning Journeys with the teacher and key early years team, talking about their experiences and learning, which helps build strong relationships immediately.
Welcoming External Children to Reception
Children joining us from external settings are included in the same careful, child-focused provision to ensure they benefit from a strong focus on social, emotional, and communication development.

Reception Class Play Sessions
We invite small groups of incoming children to join us for free-flow play sessions in the Reception classroom during the Summer Term. This allows children to explore their new class, meet their teachers, and make friends with their new classmates.

Meet the Teacher Events
Before the new academic year begins, we facilitate formal and informal opportunities for parents and children to meet the Reception class teacher, helping everyone to become familiar and happy with the new school routines and expectations.
The Value of Alleyn Court Reception
Our Reception class is where the foundation for future academic excellence is laid. We blend the best of structured academic learning with the fun, exploratory spirit of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Specialist Teaching
Unlike many settings, our Reception pupils benefit from specialist-taught lessons from dedicated teachers in subjects such as French, Art, Drama, Music, and P.E. This sets a high academic standard from the start.
Continued Funding Support
We support your family financially by continuing to offer the 15-Hour Early Years Entitlement (EYE) remission against your fees up until the end of Term 5 of the academic year, aligning with Southend and Essex Council guidance.
Small Class Sizes
Our commitment to an average class size of 17 pupils ensures every child receives the individual attention and support needed to thrive academically and personally.
Empowering Families Through Communication
We believe that effective communication between school and home is vital for a successful transition.

Open and Honest Dialogue
We encourage parents to talk openly about the transition process with their children, allowing them to express their feelings, whether they are excited or anxious.

The Key Person
Parents can always speak to their child's key person in Nursery or the Reception teacher who can provide tailored advice and reassurance, ensuring barriers to effective transition are considered and overcome.
Plan Your Child's Confident Start
Ensure your child has the best possible start to their education. Whether moving up from our Nursery or joining us new, the Alleyn Court Reception class provides the perfect nurturing environment for curious minds.
