Alleyn
Court, a preparatory school for over 320 boys and girls between the ages
of 2½ and 11, was founded in 1904 by Theodore Wilcox through the
inspiration and financial support of his cousin, Charles Dodgson, better
known as Lewis Carroll. Alleyn Court is still owned by the Wilcox
family, which over the century has provided four generations of head
teachers, four teachers and thirteen pupils, and to this day the school is
attended by two of the founder’s great great grandchildren.
As
the oldest private school in south east Essex Alleyn Court has dedicated
itself to the very best in all round education, initially for boarding
boys, and since 1988 for day boys and girls. It has an enviable reputation
throughout Essex and is accredited by the Independent Schools Council. The
Head Teacher, Richard Chandler, is a member of the Incorporated
Association of Prep Schools and the Independent Schools Association.
Situated in 13 acres of land on the outskirts of Southend-on-Sea, the
school is in a beautiful secluded rural setting, whilst only 2 miles from
the centre of the town.
