The
Senior School at Alleyn Court consists of Years 4,5 and 6 with two
classes in each year group.
At
the beginning of Year 4 the children move into the Senior Block known as
the Tomlinson Building. In the Year 4 pupils spend just under half of
their timetable with their form teacher concentrating on the core
subjects of Literacy and Maths. They will also study PSHE with their
Form teacher as well as DT. The rest of their curriculum is taught by
specialist teachers and the children therefore move around the block to
the specialist classes. The specialist subjects are: French, History,
Geography, RE, Art, PE/Games, Music and ICT.
The
children in Years 5 and 6 are taught all their subjects by specialist
teachers. We are justifiably proud of this at Alleyn Court as there are
few schools in the country that can boast full specialist teaching at
such a young, yet important age.
As
Southend has 4 state grammar schools and 4 comprehensive schools with
grammar streams, many of the children at Alleyn Court take the eleven
plus test organised by “The Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex” in
the November of Year 6. The test consists of three papers: Verbal
Reasoning, English and Maths. The Verbal Reasoning Paper is worth double
the marks of the other two. Despite being a non-selective school Alleyn
Court’s record at successfully preparing pupils for this test is
excellent. Regularly over 80% of the 11+ entry pass into local grammars
or grammar streams. We introduce a timetabled lesson of Verbal Reasoning
from the start of Year 5 and through Year 6 up to the Test, with a
voluntary VR Club offered after school in Year 6; whilst our specialist
Maths and English teachers ensure that the children are as fully
prepared as possible for the other papers.
We
also prepare those pupils wishing to take Independent School Entry
Papers at age 11. In the last 5 years over 30 pupils have gone on to
major Public Schools such as Brentwood, Felsted, The Royal Hospital
School and Framlingham with two gaining scholarships to Bishop
Stortford’s College and Tonbridge.
The
Senior School Form Teachers are responsible for the pastoral care of
their pupils; they also organise many of their trips and work with them
to produce bi-annual Form Assemblies. Our Year 6 children also learn the
responsibilities of being prefects, librarians and monitors, taking on
the role of one these each term. Each year a Head Boy and a Head Girl
are chosen from the Year 6 cohort, who will lead their peers through the
range of responsibilities and will be the public voice of the school
and pupils at end of term assemblies, Speech Day and Carol Service.
Our
Senior children are highly motivated, confident and polite young people.
Whatever secondary school they move on to, they will take something
special of Alleyn Court with them and whilst at Alleyn Court many of
them will make friendships for life.
