| All children are different and all classes are
different. This is why we believe that teachers should have the
flexibility they need to tailor the curriculum to the needs of the
children in their class.
Although parallel classes follow the same curriculum, our
teachers have the freedom to teach in their own style. We use a
wide variety of teaching styles and resources, adapting them to meet the
needs of the children in our care.
Literacy
The children spend around 5 hours per week in
Literacy lessons. They are taught by their class teacher and enjoy
taking part in a wide variety of activities designed to teach the key
areas of punctuation, grammar, handwriting and reading.
In Year One we aim to hear the children read in school at least four
times each week. As the children progress through Years Two
and Three, to reflect the children's growing maturity and reading
ability, they become more independent readers. During these years
a higher emphasis is placed on independent reading and group reading
activities. We aim to hear them read individually at least twice a
week in Years Two and Three and by the end of Year Three, the
majority of our children are confident readers with a higher than
average reading age.
Parents play a vital role in teaching the children to read. We
strongly encourage all parents to hear their children read at home every
night, or for the children with a more advanced reading ability, give
them opportunities to read independently.
Mathematics
The children spend between 4 and 5 hours per week in
Mathematics
lessons. They follow the programme set out in the Numeracy
strategy, with enhancements to meet the needs of our children. We
place a high emphasis on mental maths methods and the work we do in
class reflects this. The children progress to learn written
methods for performing calculations and use their knowledge to complete
problem solving tasks.
Science
The children spend around one hour per week in
Science lessons. By completing practical tasks and taking part in
a variety of other activities, we encourage the children to develop
enquiring minds.

PE and Games
The children enjoy taking part in a
variety of sporting activities using our outstanding facilities (See
sports section).
The children in Years Two and Three have one P.E.
lesson a week taught by Mr. Hart and two afternoon games sessions during
which they play a variety of team sports.
The children must have the correct kit in
school for these lessons as they are are unlikely to be able to take
part without it.
The children in Year One have One P.E. lesson with Mr. Hart and one
Dance/Movement lesson with Mr. Ekins each week. They should come to
school dressed in their P.E. kit for their P.E. lesson with Mr. Hart, which
takes place at the beginning of the day. This lesson might take
place in the sports hall, or outside. They need to bring their
uniform to change into after the lesson.
The children are asked to bring their to bring
their P.E. kit into school on the day they have their Dance/movement
lesson. As the lessons will normally take place indoors, to save
time, the children don't usually change into their full kit
for this lesson, they keep their shirt/blouse on, put their shorts on and perform in bare
feet.
Religious
Education
The children have one R.E. lesson each week. In these lessons
they learn about the different religions with a special focus on
religious festivals and the similarities between religions. R.E. lessons
are either taught by the children's class teacher or Mrs Jenny Reeder.
PSHE and
Citizenship
This subject has a weekly timetabled slot, but it taught throughout
the week through other subject areas. The timetabled lessons take
the form of discussions, class work and circle time. In addition
to the work in class, the children attend assemblies with Monday's
assembly a special time set aside for the Junior children.

increases to two lessons in Years Two and Three. French is taught
by Mme
Gabarrot, our specialist French teacher.

The children are taught Art by Mr Larwood, our specialist Art
teacher. From an early age they learn a variety of painting and
drawing techniques and the children's impressive work can always be seen on
display around the school.
Design
and Technology
Design and Technology is taught by the class teachers. The
children are given opportunities to use a variety of materials and

school office for details of this.

they learn ICT skills such as word-processing, creating multimedia
presentations, using the Internet, control technology, presenting
