Welcome to our website and our school. Thank you for expressing interest in Alleyn Court.

This website will give you a brief flavour of the school and a strong sense of the friendly, family community that we are. I believe it reflects the energy, joy and sense of purpose that characterises Alleyn Court.

The school’s motto – ‘non progredi est regredi’ – not to move forwards is to move backwards, demonstrates that the school places great emphasis on progress, which is exactly what we strive for and achieve with each of our individual pupils.

History of the School

Alleyn Court was founded in 1904 by Theodore Wilcox. His family has cared for their school ever since, having provided four generations of Headmasters and the current Chairman of the Board. It is the longest established family school in England.

In choosing the school’s motto – Non progredi est regredi – not to go forwards is to go backwards, Theodore Wilcox expressed his desire that the school would be forward looking, innovative and proactive. Anybody who has had contact with the school or knows Alleyn Court today will certainly vouch that these values are still evident. Children are encouraged to be inquisitive in their learning and are provided with numerous opportunities to promote their academic, social, moral and physical development and skills. The school moved from its original site in Westcliff to its current beautiful site in Thorpe Bay in 1993, although one of the Pre-Prep departments still occupies those original premises. The school also became fully co-educational at this time.
